I can't remember how Alise and I first came across each other but she has grown to be a dear blog friend of mine for many reasons, one of which is her love for Ben and Jerry's ice cream. I cannot wait to meet her in April! I've guest posted for Alise before so I am happy to now return the favor. Her TIHWM perfectly illustrates what crazy odds there are for two people meet and then fall in love. Prepare to be blown away.
The Day I Didn’t Mind the Heat
For my entire life, I’ve hated the heat. I am absolutely miserable when I’m hot and most people don’t want to be around me. It’s certainly not when you’d want to meet me because I am not at my most charming when I’m sweaty and gross.
It was a hot Friday afternoon in June of 1992. I had just graduated from high school and was just days away from celebrating my 18th birthday, officially marking my journey to becoming an adult.
Part of this move to adulthood was that I was putting off the angst of looking for a boyfriend. I had played that game with little success in high school, and wasn’t interested in continuing it into college. I was perfectly content entering college as a single woman and was looking forward to finding myself.
On this particular Friday afternoon, however, I wasn’t thinking about boyfriends or college or self-awareness. I was just thinking that the band that was playing at The Fringe at Creation ’92 looked really cool in their picture and I wanted to hear what they sounded like. The rest of my family was more interested in eating lunch than listening to a band that none of us were familiar with, but I’ve always loved finding new music, so I took my towel and looked for a space near the stage.
Because I have always been a talker, I immediately engaged the person sitting beside in a conversation. I asked her where she was from and started to ask her about the band that was about to play. She was also unfamiliar with the band, but said that the guy sitting beside her had heard them and he would be able to fill me in a bit.
They switched seats and I was sitting beside a guy with the most gorgeous eyes I’ve ever seen.
We sat and talked about the band we were about to see. We talked about other bands we had seen at the festival and bands that we liked who weren’t there. We asked where the other was from and how long we had been attending the festival. There wasn’t much time before the concert started, but we had an instant connection.
After the concert, we exchanged addresses and phone numbers. And I hoped with all of my heart that I would hear from him again.
We met in a crowd with tens of thousands of people. We met at a place where showers were hard to come by. We met when we were young and lived in two different states. We met when I was going to college and he still had another year of high school. We met when it was hot.
But on that day, those things didn’t matter. On that day, I didn’t mind the heat.
