Somewhere in the middle of last month's craziness, I went to the Influence Conference. I've been to a few conferences in my day and I know being around a large group of creatives can make a girl feel a wee bit insecure.
It has nothing to do with the conference attendees and everything to do with the Dark Art of Comparison. I'll go to a blog conference and start to fret about my stats and how I don't have ads and no one's asked me to guest post there and how come this or how come that. While at Influence and Allume, I made a point to remember why I started blogging in the first place and how grateful I am anyone shows up to read me at all.
I also made a point to wear clothes that make me feel confident. And wouldn't you know? No insecure feelings.
An easy way to combat potential insecurity is putting thought into one's attire. For me, it could be as simple as a sassy pair of underwear- no one else will know about it but it makes me smile just the same. (TMI?) For a conference though, I want to rock an entire outfit. Yes, this means figuring out what will make you feel confident at least a few days before you wear it. But it's worth it.
Normally I don't debut new clothes at big events but there are exceptions to the rule.
I found this silky tunic when I was home in July. I stopped at my favorite thrift store Village Discount (I've mentioned the store before here) and picked the shirt up for a few bucks. It was way too hot then to even think about wearing it but I dreamed of a day when I could pair it with some skinny jeans.
Influence was geared toward hip 20- and 30-somethings and I thought the tunic would be a smash hit.
Given the circumstances going on back home, it became even more important to feel at home in my skin. The tunic is exactly me. It didn't matter what anyone else thought because I felt good. And that's what matters most.
