A year ago I joined Book Of The Month Club. I'd seen a few friends post about it and was really impressed by the selections. I figured I'd give a 3 month membership a try and see what I thought. I've been hooked ever since.
The Book Of The Month Club offers hardcover books at a great rate and they're all new publications. On the first of the month, they announce the five selections chosen by their Judges. You choose which one you want by the sixth of the month. If you don't like any of the selections, you can skip that month. Then you wait for a happy mail delivery!
Admittedly, you don't have to twist my arm much when it comes to books but BOTM goes above and beyond, from how easy it is to use the service to the guest judges to the packaging design.
Here are four reasons why I love BOTM:
1. They expand my reading horizons.
I'm a huge reader and keep an eye on forthcoming publications, as well as get a fair number of ARCs. BOTM still manages to expand my reading horizons. Every single month. They feature both books I haven't heard of but also books that aren't my normal genre- but should be. When I go out of my comfort zone, I'm pleasantly surprised. And when I go with my tried-and-true, I'm a happy camper. They can do no wrong in my eyes.
I love that they use a variety of judges and bring outside celebrity judges in, too. We get a variety of tastes and we're better for it.
2. They've introduced me to some of my favorite books.
Last year three BOTM selections made it onto my Favorite Fiction of 2016 list: All The Ugly and Wonderful Things (my favorite of all the favorites), Before The Fall, and The Wonder. (Two were my actual BOTM selections. The other was an ARC.)
I've read eight of the twelve books I chose since last April. (All this moving around means my books are not always where I'm living so I've fallen behind.) Of those eight books, four were 5-stars (All The Ugly and Wonderful Things, Before The Fall, Girls In The Moon, The Sun Is Also A Star) , three were 4-stars (The Trespasser, No One Knows, Rich And Pretty) , and one was 3-stars (The Association Of Small Bombs.) Not too shabby! And that doesn't count the multiple other BOTM selections I didn't choose but read later, which were all 4 or 5 star reads.
This is good stuff, people.
3.Hardcover books at a steal of a price.
Hardcover books aren't cheap but BOTM has somehow worked their magic so you can often get it cheaper than even the ebook version. Right now if you purchase a 3-month BOTM membership, you'll pay just $9.99 per month and they'll throw in a BOTM tote. I'm jealous you'll get a tote bag. That deal wasn't around when I signed up so I'll live vicariously through you.
If three months seems like too big of a commitment, you can try it for one month for just $5. You guys. Seriously. A freaking hardcover new release for only $5?! This is nuts.
On the months where you're really having trouble making up your mind on the selections, you can throw in extra books for only $9.99 each. I've done this a couple of times and it feels positively luxurious and yet it's an absolute steal.
4. Book mail is the best!
I love when my BOTM package arrives in the mail, partly because it's an anticipated book and partly because of how well it's packaged. I truly love their boxes. Exhibits below.
When I first signed up, there were more bells and whistles but I appreciate the way they've pared it down to the essentials. Although I did like the quote bookmarks and use them all regularly.
This past Saturday the email went out with the April selections.
As I read through each Judge's introduction to their selection, I had the hardest time making up my mind. This happens every month.
At the outset, I wouldn't have guessed I'd find American War or The Impossible Fortress compelling but the joke's on me because the Judges convinced me and they're on the To Read list now. One Day We'll All Be Dead And None Of This Will Matter was already on my radar but Startup is completely up my alley, while Killers Of The Flower Moon couldn't be more timely.
I went back and forth between the latter three selections before choosing Killers Of The Flower Moon.
If you're signed up for Book Of The Month, I'd love to know which one you picked and hear what your experience has been like! Let me know in the comments.
